Benefits of the Art Literacy Program:
-
Encourages students to think creatively and to problem solve, which prepares them for their futures.
-
Helps students to learn how to observe, something naturalists, climatologists, writers, and doctors need to know how to do.
-
Gives students the opportunities to form mental images, an ability chemists, engineers, architects, designers, and inventors use to think up new ideas.
-
Celebrates many perspectives. Students learn to value diverse views and cultures, which is ever important in a global society.
-
Communicates ideas and emotions of the human spirit, connecting us to our history, traditions, and heritage.
-
Provides an artistic platform for students to realize that there are many ways to see and interpret our beautiful world.

Art Literacy Training
There are six art literacy units for the 2025/26 school year. At the start of each unit we hold a 30-60 minute training session to go over the lesson plan and art project. We offer an in-person training at 9:00 am in the Portable 1 at Scholls Heights or an evening Zoom at 7:00 pm. If possible, we highly encourage attending the in-person training to have an opportunity to see the materials firsthand and make the art project, as well as get to know the other volunteers.
You only need to attend one training session (i.e. morning OR evening) per unit. We will be holding a brief new volunteer orientation after our October training to go over the program basics, technology use and any questions about art literacy. All new volunteers are encouraged to stay for this if possible but returning volunteers are more than welcome as well.

Art Literacy Coordinators
Thank you so much for your interest in art literacy at Scholls Heights! We would love to have you join our fun and exciting volunteer run program. Art literacy is a great way to get involved in your child’s classroom and meet other parents at our school. We provide 6 art lessons each year and all the training, materials and supplies are provided for you. Absolutely no art experience or skill is necessary. For more information please contact us at artlit@shpto.org
Your art literacy coordinators are Nicole Urasky and Andrea Mitchell. Nicole has a background in visual arts and in her spare time enjoys disc golf and numismatics. She has a daughter in fifth grade and a son in second grade. Andrea works in advertising, creating local and national brand advertising campaigns. She enjoys being outdoors, spending time with family, and watching football. She has a son in first grade and a daughter who will start Kindergarten next year.
For the 2025/26 school year, Nicole returns for her fourth year as co-coordinator and Andrea joins in her first year after volunteering with Art Lit last year. Together, they’re looking forward to another creative and fun year of art!”
